Your Stalkers Diary. July 2005.

One day wet and cold another hot and dry, but all good for stalking if you know the habits of the deer.

This last month has again produced good results with the build up to the rut. The does are in fine condition and with some of the hay cut and away in the barn. They can often be seen during the day in the set-aside or cover strips around the fields edges.

The Stewardship Scheme has realy made a difference to the wildlife. Getting pheasant pens ready has been a priority with fox bashing a close second. For those with game birds, you will know what I mean.

We have had some fine stalking with deer seen on every outing. We have averaged one buck per two outings, not a bad result.

I have seen bucks with does regularly over the last week and the signs are that the rut has started be it very early. Calling has so far had limited results but in the next week or so will get better and better!!( I hope)

Tips for stalkers!

Don't forget your anti-midge.

Don't stand in a wood ants nest when calling in bucks, it is very hard to stand still when a buck in coming up to you!!!

Finally beware the foreign stalker who has all the kit but insists on lashings of expensive aftershave, on the otherhand it lets you know if the wind has changed when he is close up behind you!!

Pete.
